BusinessHire – Hidden Talent Pools

Identifying Talent and Cultivating Success For the Region

As we work through sector strategies to make smart long-term transitions to the future, what about now? Where do we look to find the ‘hidden talent’ already in our marketplace? Where are those people who, with a little encouragement and a bit of skill retooling, would return to work, step up to new opportunities and perhaps fill key positions in your business?

Young Adults

Unsure of their next move, young adults are great candidates for rapidly growing areas of the economy, such as manufacturing, which provides pride of work, good pay and upward mobility. Internships, apprenticeship programs and other work experience options may be available, too.

We also have a summer intern program, allowing businesses to provide meaningful work experience for high school juniors and graduating seniors with six weeks of paid employment in June and July. This program is more than a job, it’s a true learning experience with lessons about obtaining and keeping a job, and learning skills of professionalism.

Private and nonprofit businesses may apply. All costs and compensation are paid by CareerSource Brevard Flagler Volusia.

We are currently recruiting employers interested in providing 2025 internships. If your company is interested in participating, please email Janay Gelin or call 321-394-0647.

*This program is available to current high school juniors and graduating seniors on free or reduced lunch. Updated March 8, 2024.

Mature Workers

The workforce looks very different from years ago with workers staying in their jobs later in their career, returning to the workforce after they interrupted careers for family and other priorities, or because they want a new experience outside of retirement.

These workers exhibit many of the employment skills that employers identify as critical. Living healthier, longer lives, they are upgrading their skills for today’s in-demand jobs and seek sustainable employment. There are also individuals returning to the workforce who have taken advantage of the Back to Work 50+ program, which provides tools and coaching resources that ready them for the current job marketplace.

Talk to us about how you can connect with seasoned talent for your job openings. Consider the benefits of older, mature workers:

  • Mature workers are loyal, reliable and stay in jobs longer
Older adults are motivated to continue earning as they are more likely to have financial obligations and family responsibilities which incentivize them to stay in jobs longer.
  • Mature workers bring experience and expertise
Older adults provide a wealth of knowledge and skills garnered from their extensive work history. They can mentor younger colleagues, helping to boost productivity.
  • Mature workers create a diverse workplace
Having employees of different ages contributes to a more balanced workplace, offering a wide spectrum of perspectives, problem-solving skills, attitudes and innovative ideas.

Veterans & Military Families

VETERANS

Those who have served our country have specialized skills, unique perspectives to offer and are a great resource for any business. Veterans perform in situations of high stress and high expectations, understand teamwork, process protocols, and deadlines. Veterans have an accelerated learning curve, leadership skills, perform well under pressure, have respect for procedures, work cooperatively alongside varying groups of people, respect the importance of health and safety and have exhibit high integrity.

Many Veterans have had extensive background checks for various levels of security clearances. When hiring a Veteran, you are selecting a pre-screened candidate that may have had already completed an extensive background check.

  • 40% of Military Personnel have job assignments that involve information resource management.
  • 92% of Active Duty Military Personnel in the U.S. use computers at work.
  • 26.3% of Veterans 25 and older have at least a Bachelor’s Degree.

CSBFV can help you identify suitable Veterans, assist with completing job orders and screening, and refer qualified Veterans who meet job requirements.

MILITARY FAMILIES

Military Life also often means frequent moves that can make employment for a spouse or family member challenging. The spouses and work-age children of active military are a high-value resource for companies. Many have moved from place to place and have a diversity of job skills and cultural experiences that help them fit into new roles and within an accelerated learning curve. The Military Family Employment Advocacy Program (MFEA) is a state program designed to deliver priority workforce services for eligible military family members through Military Family Employment Advocates. We provide services such as employment counseling, job search, resume development, labor market information and referrals. Learn More about the Military Family Employment Advocacy Program.

Justice Involved Individuals

Those whose careers are in transition due to some degree of justice involvement often find barriers to employment. Employers may be eligible for tax credits and candidates may have specialized job skills gained in training programs to get back to work.

Hannah was struggling as a single mother with two young children, but with help from CareerSource she earned a scholarship that allowed her to go back to school to learn graphic design. With this help, Hannah is now succeeding on her own terms.

Rafael Fernandez Dace found himself switching careers. A lifelong learner and great candidate with the right (CNC) certification but no experience, Rafael couldn’t make the final job connection. That is when OJT really matters, providing On-The-Job Training in the employer’s workplace, using their equipment, processes and protocols — all with wages supported during the training program. OJT is a clear Win-Win for Rafael and for his new employer, JW Transmissions.
